GRAD Act offers more flexibility to universities PDF Print E-mail

The Louisiana Granting Resources and Autonomy for Diplomas Act, passed by the legislature and now Act 741 from the House Bill 1171 will offer post-secondary institutions a chance for flexibility and autonomy in exchange for meeting performance objectives.

Part of Gov. Bobby Jindal’s legislative package, Jindal said, “The LA GRAD Act provides a strong incentive for our colleges and universities to increase retention and graduation rates, more closely align academic programs with workforce needs and to excel in research that will move Louisiana’s economy forward. The new law connects, for the first time ever, performance and autonomy, giving campuses and their management boards the ability to earn greater operational flexibility...help improve our institutions’ competitiveness, effectiveness and efficiency and more importantly, we can better prepare our students to compete for jobs in the 21st century.” ...

Governor Bobby Jindal spent Tuesday with Vice President Joe Biden and it does not sound like a whole lot was accomplished.  Jindal says the vice president listened to his concerns and promised to take them back to Washington, but the governor says Biden didn't make any specific promises. ...

Jindal talked specifically about the challenges of getting a permit to build rock barriers near Grand Isle.  He says the federal government is more concerned about what the rocks will do to the water than what the oil will do to the coast. ...

Louisiana Gov. Jindal Presses Vice Pres. Biden Over Oil Spill PDF Print E-mail

Louisiana Republican Governor Bobby Jindal plans to bend Vice President Joe Biden's ear --about the federal response to the oil spill-- during Biden's trip to the Gulf Coast Tuesday.

"They need to treat this like the war it is," Jindal said during the vice president’s visit. ...

Jindal also reiterated his goal for the visit, via Twitter: "My message to the VP today is simple: greater urgency is needed. It's time to lead or get out of the way. " ...

"BEADS: To the Louisiana Legislature, for passing of House Bill 1240, House Bill 1170 and House Bill 1274, each of which tightens restrictions on drunk drivers. The measures, which Gov. Bobby Jindal plans to sign, respectively require special licenses for drivers required to use alcohol-detecting interlock devices on their vehicles; the suspension of bus-driving privileges for up to 10 years for school bus drivers who refuse to take a field sobriety test; and a 45-day ban on driving for drivers convicted of a second DWI, a move that prevents them from immediately getting a restricted license to commute to work. Louisiana is notorious for its high incidence of impaired drivers. Tough laws and aggressive enforcement will get some of them off the road, perhaps before they kill someone."

Jindal signs child support bill PDF Print E-mail

"Gambling winnings will soon be subject to seizure from parents who haven't paid their child support.

Gov. Bobby Jindal signed the measure by Sen. Nick Gautreaux into law Thursday that allows for the taking of the gambling wins for back-owed child support. It will let the state intercept a person's winnings once they hit $1,200."
