A bill cleared the Legislature Monday that local supporters say will streamline the state Labor Department and help it to better respond to regional workforce issues.

The 88-page bill, one of Gov. Bobby Jindal’s goals for the session, unanimously passed the House Monday afternoon.

It now awaits Jindal’s signature.

"I believe this workforce-development bill will better structure the system," said Jane Arnette, executive director of the South Central Industrial Association. "I think it’s building a true, sound base that we can grow from."

The new proposal would rename the state labor department to the Louisiana Workforce Commission.
