Fresh off his "Tonight Show" appearance, Gov. Bobby Jindal told members of the National Press Club on Friday that the old joke that Louisiana "is half underwater and half under indictment" no longer applies.

He traveled with House Speaker Jim Tucker, a Republican, and Senate President Joel Chaisson, a Democrat, to show that the ethics overhauls and business tax reductions enacted early in his first term occurred because lawmakers worked across party lines to send a new message about the state.

"Got rid of the free golf trips, free football tickets, also capped the lavish meals that had been commonplace in Baton Rouge, in the state's capital, before," he said. "Put all government spending on line."

The most important thing, Jindal said, is "to restore the people's trust in the system in Louisiana," and "send a message to the country that Louisiana is open for business."
