Editorial: Governor Keeping Promises

Editorial: Governor Keeping Promises
Bogalusa Daily News, May 7, 2008

It has put him at odds with some of our state's lawmakers, but Gov. Bobby Jindal is evidently intent on keeping his campaign promise on holding state officials accountable.

In Washington, they're called earmarks. Here in Louisiana, they are called NGOs and legislators have managed to get 66 of them - worth just a few dollars shy of $14 million - into the 3008-2009 state operating budget.

Gov. Jindal has told lawmakers to take them out unless they meet four criteria:

  • Must have statewide or substantial regional impact

  • Must have been presented during the legislative session

  • Must be a state agency priority
  • Must be published online on a form that requires information about the agency and people requesting funds and what would be done with the money.
  • ...

If a local project can't stand on its own two feet and generate enough excitement to generate the funding flow necessary, then perhaps it should be re-evaluated as to its true need.

While $14 million is a drop in the state budget, you take $14 million here and $14 million there and pretty soon, you're talking serious money.

    Give 'em heck, guv.
